We are all faced with adversity and times where the hardships in our life can feel overwhelming. We may not be able to construct our life to avoid these challenges, but we can learn the secrets of why some people seem to sail through rough times with apparent ease, humor, and maybe even, a sense of excitement and appreciation. Mastering our own mental and emotional processes can be one of the most pivotal accomplishments of our lifetime. The impact is so far reaching that every aspect of our life will be enhanced.
The true challenge in mastering these internal processes is to be able to do it under adverse conditions--ones where we are challenged and out of our comfort zone. This might mean being stuck in an airport, finding your flight cancelled, standing in a not moving line a mile long--filled with angry people and exhausted airline staff. Or you may happen to be stuck in a situation with tedious work that you have little interest in, but it must be done in a short time frame. You might even find yourself in the presence of someone you really dislike, but you have to engage and cooperate with them. How we react to these types of situations will either make them worse and seem to last forever, or we can have them pass in some absurdly pleasant way. Knowing you have this choice is one thing; having developed yourself to a point where it becomes a skill you can apply is another.
The workshop will begin at a resort in Dana Point, California where we will meet and begin our journey. After a night at the resort, we will then be off to live the life of 19 th century sailor Richard Henry Dana. You will spend an overnight experience on board the Brig Pilgrim. This true replica of the 19 th century Brig made famous by Richard Henry Dana's classic novel Two Years Before the Mast will be an ideal location for a study in mastering adversity and hardship. It's a harsh life, one where the Captain's word is the law, and a sailor works long hard hours with little time for lollygagging around. Finally, our odyssey will come to an end with a meeting ashore to discover the lessons and insights we've learned from our experience.
