Philotimo is considered one of the highest Greek values.
In translation “philotimo” literally means the “love of honor.” One who has philotimo exhibits a special sense of honor, dignity, obligation, self-respect and a high regard for teamwork. In ancient times it was considered an “extremely sensitive region of men's souls, one that gave forth gallantry, nobility and moral pride.”
The power of philotimo was extraordinary. It bound the individual to a very high standard of behavior. This core value was not just an admired trait among Greek citizens, it was demanded of them. The expectation was that all of the members of the society or community would first act in the interests of the greater good.
The implications of this ideal on any community, team or alliance today are profound. Unfortunately, neither the word nor the idea has any English equivalent. Thus, the concept has been largely lost in our culture. We feel it’s important to bring it back. We’ll shed light on ways to exemplify and incorporate the value of philotimo in living our extraordinary lives.
On this Learning Vacation you will take time to discover your inborn sense of honor. Greece is the perfect setting to identify and reconnect with your qualities of philotimo. We’ll look to the greater good, and examine how we are living our lives according to a code of ethics and honor.
